Understanding Nasal Allergies
Dr. Storms defines nasal allergy types.
Your nose is responsible for more than just your sense of smell. Above all else,
it is the main passageway to your respiratory system. The air you breathe
circulates through various nasal passages, which act to filter, moisten, and
warm the air. This process helps to keep elements from the environment, such as
pollution and dust, from traveling into your lungs.
If you have nasal allergies, your body reacts to seemingly harmless substances
called allergens. When you inhale an allergen, your immune system releases
substances that cause the lining of your nose to become irritated and inflamed.
Inflammation is a defense mechanism that helps ward off infection or repair
injury. These changes can lead to nasal allergy symptoms, including:
-
Sneezing
-
Nasal congestion
-
Runny nose
Understanding your nose and all its functions will help you understand how to
take care of it.
